HUB-BUB IN THE BAOBABS
1989
Film
16mm b/w – 35 mins
A testament of sorts to my time spent in Kenya and Madagascar with my lover Leila who was pregnant with our daughter Eden. With a 16mm Bolex camera I shot the landscape and immersed myself in the culture of man-eating trees and the ‘dead’. (I would return to this preoccupation once again in the wake of my father’s death in 2000, Whilst we had been away the UK had been ravaged by ferocious storms that had devastated the landscape so I set about melding the folkloric traditions of two very disparate worlds in an attempt to sooth the damage. A failed shamanic spell and libation to help soothe the painfulness.
Gary Parker also helped with the 16mm sequences shot in the UK, who I later went on to work with on Jaunt, Gallivant, This Filthy Earth and Ivul.
