I have spent many days on the lake at Montbel but during that November there was little to no water. Tragic things have happened there; bodies have been pulled from her depths. Lovely things have happened there; we have made love in the woods.

I stood for two hours and watched the shadow of my tripod slide slowly across the cracked earth.

I lay down and contemplated the colour of its silence.
