BECAUSE THE REST IS SILENCE
BECAUSE THE REST IS SILENCE reconfigures aspects of Kötting’s previous moving image works, which focus on the idea of place. But perhaps more importantly the potential for temporal disjunction, memory, misremembrance and the persistence of the past within much of his work.
An hauntological gadabout inclusive of images and out-takes from his journeying and the films EDITH WALKS, GALLIVANT, LEK AND THE DOGS & WATLING STREET. However, the glue that holds much of the film together is the sound and music gleaned from his INSIDEOUT CD published through Sonic Arts Network many moons ago.
Films of memory breed more films of memory. Ultimately Memory begets more memory.

"From the most ecological of filmmakers, the deftest re-cycling operation. All those old dreams that never happened, happening again, cards on the table in a newly shuffled order, tarot of fate. Such nostalgia for the unborn. You give hauntology a good name. THANK YOU" - Iain Sinclair
Alex - I remember you and you and you.
Sukhdev - All the things I’ve done all the places I’ve been what do they add up to?
Edith Swan Neck - That they did have sought…. and also lepers here have been recovered….
Iain – so that the cords in our spine heat and take us among fields of yellow oil seed rape and always always looking for the old stones…. stones at the feet or that we could pick up to put in our eyes and make us blind…. so that we can walk better so that we can understand more truly what we are doing and where we should be and why we should move and why we should keep moving and why we can’t stop until we achieve the essence of the pilgrimage…. to bring us back to place where we started which is no longer there….
This is forever
It will always be like this
Archive V/O - Something about it – it is not like the sea – the sea – the sea – the goddam sea - you know – it’s a it’s a it’s a it’s a it’s a it’s a it’s a it’s a….
Edith Swan Neck - Lame made whole and blind restored to sight - Mariners vexed with tempest safe to port brought - Deaf wounded and lunatic
Archive V/O - Over the sea and over the land and he said bring forth – BRING FORTH
Archive V/O - Her brow was as creamy as the crested wave - her sea blue eyes were wild – but nothing promised that is not performed
Gladys and Eden (singing) I do like to be beside the seaside – I do like to be beside the sea
Gladys - Shut your mouth – that’s it.
Iain – Astronauts in their chariots and nothing is as it was and nothing will be again except that we pace on together in step – remorselessly looking for answers that will never be found.
BECAUSE THE REST IS SILENCE
Alex – How these stories play out.
Gladys - Yea I wouldn’t mind leading the blind around.
Iain – We watched from the clouds while the astronauts in their chariots – and nothing is as it was and nothing will be again except that we pace on together….
Sukhdev – We fly away to strange new zones more brilliant and polymorphous than those through which we drift and trudge each day.
Alex - You and You and You
Gladys – I think that’s the worst affliction you can have.
Archive V/O - It’s a it’s a it’s a it’s an empty world eh?
Alex – How it’s – gait – keeps – arty facts….
Alex – Amidst all the things that pass as real.
Sukhdev – I just drift. Wander about. Often I walk into doors or end up with scratches or bruises on my legs with no idea at all how they got there.
Gladys – So therefore…. But….
Sukhdev - If someone were to draw me it would be a wavy line.
Archive V/O - In order to understand…. An imagination…. To be desired…. As we wish to be thought…. And sometimes.... Free
Alex - I remember you….
Mary Wild - Translation is seen here as a sort of movement in space or a conveyance from one person, place or condition to another. Memory and prescience are captured in present time.
Iain - Bulverhythe to Montségur
Andrew – From inside one thing to the outside of another.
Alex - History of wrung impulse.
ANOTHER YEAR GONE
Alex – Go play with your own.
FROM INSIDE ONE THING TO OUTSIDE OF ANOTHER
Iain – The point of a good view is that it should capture and give relief to the journey that led up to it.
MacGillivray (singing) - With his skull…. in a spring…. took his last stare…. seeking the sky…. Imperceptible…. Luminous loch…. Biting at the…. Blinded stream…. Biting at the…. Blinded stream…. Biting at the…. Blinded stream….
Alex – To be clean.
Sukhdev – Nights have no end - days have no beginning – what and when and how?
Sukhdev – All the things I’ve done all the places I’ve been. What do they mean? What do they add up to?
Eden – Hello Papa.
Andrew – Would you like another dance?
Mary Wild - His utopian vision is to change the values of the world.
Archive V/O – An intellectual if he is in parallel to the senses…. the memory and by the appetite crosses into….
Gladys – Oh no. No. I’ve seen what I’ll never see in my life again. Will I?
Mary Wild – Nostalgia effectively is a longing with the Homeland.
Sukhdev – We fly away to strange new zones more brilliant and polymorphous than those through which we drift and trudge each day. And the city outside my window? It’s roar is muffled.
Claudia Barton (singing) – We fly away to strange new zones Nostalgia always informed…. Informed by its place…. The place inside…. And the city outside my window…. Is a hinterland…. Running towards a memory…. A blinded dream
Alex - My creation…. Amidst all the things that pass as real…. Gait…. Keeps…. Arty facts – and the fox on the heath and the rain on the planet.
Archive V/O – There’s a part of me that thinks – NO – I shouldn’t be here – I should be up there in the Goddam mountains where Lek is…. Where people are all over the world.
Alex - I remember you and you and you….
Archive V/O – But you have a choice - do you A? With your wife and child or B….
Archive V/O – B!
